There are so many various infestations of bugs throughout the city. Elm beetles, Cottonwood beetles, Chinche bugs, Bagworm, Boxelder beetles! All these things have one thing in common. They cause little to no damage to your trees. They are leaf-eaters and leaves come back, but they are nuisances! They try getting in the house, on the picnic table, in the pool, everywhere! Treating the Elm and Cottonwood trees can be expensive and while treatment will kill the bugs that try to eat the trees, they will not kill the bugs that are trying to get in your house or lay around on your chaise lounge. You will still have a problem. Keep the doors and windows closed.
Call your pest control company to protect your house or use over-the-counter household bug spray. They have a short season and soon they will be nothing more than a bad memory. Weed killer is by far the number one thing that is hurting and killing trees in our communities. I took this picture at a house a few weeks ago.
The customer said “I only spray the parkway between the sidewalk and the street. Her HOA is on her when a weed gets to be 6” tall. Deciduous trees have roots that go out 3 times their height in every direction. The parkway is close enough that the trees drank the poison. In fact, there is no place on your residential property that you can spray strong weed killers where a tree is not going to drink it. If the weed killer label says “kills fast” or “lasts” it will hurt or kill your tree. I went to another house where he used a commercial spraying company. He has used this company twice annually for 4 years and has not had any problems. Last year, he said he only had to have them come out once because the weeds didn’t come back again mid-summer. This year he has 4 mature trees to remove because the trees didn’t come back either.
Organically, you can try using a Vinegar recipe.
You can also buy products that are vinegar based. Vinegar neutralizes once it hits the soil. This usually only works on smaller weeds. It works best when used in hot sun as the vinegar along with the sun will burn the weed.
The only safe chemical I know to kill weeds and not hurt trees is the original, white-bottle, Round up.
So, you made a mistake and killed your tree. Learn from your mistakes and don’t use those chemicals anymore. What do you want to replace your trees with? Ask yourself questions. Do you need the tree for shade? Are you looking for color? Privacy? Low water? Not messy? Safe for dogs? Once you have answered questions about what you are looking for, then you can select a tree. Now is a terrible time to plant but not a terrible time to pick. The nurseries still have a good selection of trees. You can pick now for September/October planting. If you need help with selection, you can send me an email and I can offer some suggestions based on what you are looking for.
As I write this, Ruidoso and Mescalero are on fire. 1400 structures are gone! This is so sad.
If you live in a forested area, annually remove as much dead wood and dry needles as possible from trees and the ground. Elevate (trim up from the bottom) trees at least 1.5 feet off the ground. If you live near an open space, plant cactus at your perimeter. This water-filled plant can slow a fire down long enough until help arrives. In the case of wildfires like Ruidoso and Mescalero, there was nothing these people could do. Remember that things are just things and can be replaced. Lives cannot be replaced.
Baca’s Trees has reached another milestone.
45 years in business! We have weathered the eb and flow of economies, some very difficult. We have actively served the communities where we live. We have shared our success with schools, churches, and many non-profits throughout New Mexico. We are very aware that any success we have is because of people like you who live and work in this community. It makes sense for us to pay it forward.
Thank you for supporting us so that we can support them.
Were you able to see the KOB4 DIY with Danielle segment featuring Cut ‘N’ Dry Lumber? Dennis and Danielle did a really good job making a bench. Dennis was funny and informative and Danielle was very engaging. It looked so easy, even I can do it. That’s saying a lot!
Thank you for reading! Email me if there is a subject you want addressed.
Sincerely …
