If your leaves droop or curl, add water. If the tree is not growing, add water. I go to homes and find that their irrigation systems are set up to water for “20 minutes every day” or “40 minutes 3 times per week” or any of many combinations. Few people know how much water their trees are getting. If your trees are struggling, do the math. A 2-gallon emitter run for 30 minutes gives your tree 1 gallon of water. If you have 3 emitters, they will get 3 gallons of water. THIS IS NEVER ENOUGH WATER. Most trees have roots that start around 6” below the surface. Three gallons of water will never get to that 6” level. Watering this way 7 days a week means that you are not giving your tree enough water 7 days a week. The water you are giving is completely wasted. Here are some common issues:
• Emitters too close to the trunk. Trees get water at the outer perimeter of the tree, the drip line.
• Emitter volume is too low. Trees need large volumes less frequently rather than a small volume frequently.
• Emitters do not put out the volume as indicated. This is often due to calcium buildup or low water pressure.
Some people say water is expensive, but we need our trees. We could not live without the clean air. Without the shade, we would be paying sooo much more to cool our desert. Watering incorrectly is expensive. Watering correctly is cheaper than you think. It costs me less than $6 per month to water my big shade tree. My big shade tree saves me at least $75 per month in electric. Water your trees!
Several people sent me topics to write about. I cannot do all in one newsletter so I will try to get a topic or 2 each time for the next few months. I will start with Roundup since I received the most comments about that.
WEED KILLER IS THE #1 reason for dead trees throughout Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, and surrounding area. Roundup has a bad reputation. I’m not defending the product however the cancer cases are from employees of municipalities or farmers (that’s scary) who had years of use. Even with information about these cases, I often see employees of municipalities spraying without gloves or mask.
I often hear comments from people about the evils of Roundup, so they use other things like Groundclear or Killzall. All these chemicals are intended to poison. The original white-bottle Roundup is the only one I know of that does not poison trees. It only kills green. If you spray the weed, it will kill the weed since it is green but will do nothing to the soil. All the other products kill weeds in the same way however, they add a component that also kills the soil. It seems to me that the original white-bottle Roundup is the lesser of 2 evils.
Vinegar works if you get the weed early. It also burns the weed but does nothing to the soil. The problem with vinegar is that the weed must be smaller. If you spray vinegar on a larger weed, the weed with die back but will regenerate from the root a few weeks later.
Get out early and work for a few minutes each day. It is a mindless task that gives you mind space to solve the problems of the world! If possible, we should try to live symbiotically with the weeds. I had 2 clients on the same day. One asked how he could get rid of this invasive weed with pink flowers and the other wanted advice on how to keep the bugs off his pretty pink flowers. They were the same “weed”! One client last year was so tired of losing the weed battle that she had her yard cleared and replanted with wildflowers, weeds with flowers. Her wildflowers choke out the uglier weeds and her yard is stunning! She was telling me that several people stop by daily to take pictures.
I am not promoting Roundup. I promote abstinence but, like many grandparents know, abstinence is often ignored. If you are going to spray, I promote safe spraying.
Weeds are plants we haven’t figured out how to use. Dandelions are nutritionally excellent from flower to root. They are high in antioxidants and are excellent for liver health, blood pressure, blood sugar, inflammation and so much more! They are also excellent for landscapes.
Thank you for reading and for your comments!
